ELV34 is a synthetic elovanoid, a novel class of bioactive lipid mediators derived from very long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLC-PUFAs), specifically those with a 34-carbon chain. Developed by researchers at the LSU Health Sciences Center, ELV34 is being investigated for its neuroprotective properties in the context of ischemic stroke and other neurological diseases. It functions by modulating the phenotypic state of glial cells—including microglia, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes—shifting them from a disease-associated, pro-inflammatory state toward a homeostatic, neuroprotective state. This modulation results in reduced neuronal loss, decreased leukocyte infiltration, and the activation of anti-inflammatory signaling pathways. In experimental models of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo), intranasal administration of ELV34 has been shown to attenuate sensorimotor deficits and restore glial cell homeostasis.
