Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Elvitegravir is an antiretroviral drug used in combination with other agents for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. It acts as an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI), blocking the HIV-1 integrase enzyme that is essential for viral replication. By inhibiting this enzyme, elvitegravir prevents the integration of viral DNA into the host genome, thereby halting propagation of HIV within the body. Elvitegravir was developed by Gilead Sciences and was originally licensed from Japan Tobacco[2][5]. It is indicated primarily for use in adults who have previously received antiretroviral therapy[8].
