Elvucitabine is an investigational nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) developed for the treatment of HIV infection. It is a cytidine analog that inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by competing with natural substrates and causing chain termination during viral DNA synthesis. Elvucitabine was designed to have activity against both wild-type and certain drug-resistant strains of HIV. The drug was developed by Achillion Pharmaceuticals and has undergone clinical trials for use in combination antiretroviral therapy regimens.
