Overview

EM1 is an experimental oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion formulation containing a complex of eight distinct ceramides, including both short-chain (NS 6, NS 22, NP6, NP16, NP22, 6a, and an omega-ceramide) and long-chain (9-EOP) varieties. Developed for skin barrier repair, EM1 aims to address the physical barrier deficits characteristic of atopic dermatitis, such as the depletion of ceramides, filaggrin, and loricrin. In ex vivo studies on delipidated human skin explants, application of EM1 significantly increased epidermal ceramide levels and improved stratum corneum thickness and lamination compared to control emulsions lacking the ceramide complex. The formulation is designed to restore the intercellular cement and mitigate the "inside-outside-inside" inflammatory cycle associated with barrier dysfunction.
