Overview

EmboLog S is a medical device consisting of degradable starch microspheres (amilomer) used as an embolization agent during transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). Developed by Rxilient Health, the microspheres have an average diameter of approximately 50 micrometers and are suspended in an isotonic saline solution. When injected intra-arterially into tumor-feeding vessels, they cause transient vascular occlusion, which reduces tumor blood flow and enhances the local delivery and concentration of co-administered chemotherapeutic agents. Unlike permanent embolic agents, EmboLog S is enzymatically degraded by serum alpha-amylases with a half-life of approximately 35-40 minutes. This temporary occlusion avoids prolonged ischemia and minimizes the overexpression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), allowing for repeated treatments on the same vessels and minimizing detrimental effects on the tumor stromal microenvironment.
