Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Embopag is a small molecule thrombopoietin receptor (TPO-R) agonist marketed by Perin Healthcare for the treatment of thrombocytopenia. It acts as a mimetic of endogenous thrombopoietin by binding to the transmembrane domain of the TPO receptor (also known as MPL) on megakaryocytes and their progenitor cells. This binding activates intracellular signaling pathways, such as the JAK/STAT pathway, which promotes the proliferation and differentiation of megakaryocytes from bone marrow progenitor cells, ultimately increasing platelet production. Embopag is used in the management of conditions including chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), severe aplastic anemia, and thrombocytopenia associated with chronic hepatitis C. It is an oral medication available in multiple strengths, including a 50 mg formulation.
