Overview

Emedastine is a second-generation, selective histamine H1 receptor antagonist used primarily in ophthalmic (eye drop) form to treat symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, such as redness, itching, and swelling of the eyes. It works by blocking the action of histamine released during allergic reactions in the eye. Emedastine exhibits high selectivity for H1 receptors with minimal activity at other histamine or neurotransmitter receptors and has a rapid onset of action. The drug was developed by Alcon, a company specializing in eye care products.
