Overview

Emepronium is a quaternary ammonium compound and small molecule anticholinergic drug, primarily used in urology as an antispasmodic for the treatment of urinary frequency, urge, urge incontinence, polyuria, nocturia, enuresis, and hypertonic bladder states following surgery or radiotherapy. It acts as a muscarinic antagonist by blocking acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors (notably the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M5), leading to relaxation of bladder muscles. The drug is incompletely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and does not cross the blood-brain barrier. It is usually administered orally or intramuscularly. Emepronium can cause esophageal ulceration if not taken with sufficient liquids in an upright position[1][3][4][5][6].
