Overview

Emicizumab is a humanized bispecific monoclonal antibody used to prevent or reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in patients with hemophilia A (congenital Factor VIII deficiency), including those with or without factor VIII inhibitors. It acts by mimicking the function of coagulation factor VIII, bridging activated factor IX (FIXa) and factor X (FX) to restore the blood clotting process. Unlike native FVIII, emicizumab does not share structural homology but binds both FIXa and FX simultaneously, catalyzing FX activation and promoting thrombin generation. This mechanism allows for effective prophylaxis against bleeding in hemophilia A patients regardless of inhibitor status. Emicizumab was developed by Genentech and Chugai, subsidiaries of Hoffmann-La Roche[2][4][6][7].
