Overview

Emidol hydrochloride is a small molecule capsid assembly modulator (CAM) developed by Shenyang Pharmaceutical University for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It belongs to a class of non-nucleoside anti-HBV agents that target the HBV core protein (HBcAg). By binding to the core protein, emidol hydrochloride interferes with the assembly of the viral nucleocapsid, which is essential for the encapsidation of pregenomic RNA (pgRNA) and subsequent viral DNA replication. This mechanism of action is distinct from nucleos(t)ide analogs, which target the viral polymerase. Emidol hydrochloride has been investigated in Phase 2 clinical trials in China, specifically focusing on HBeAg-positive patients to evaluate its efficacy, safety, and optimal dosing.
