Emivirine + anti-HIV drugs refers to the **combination of emivirine**, a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), with other anti-HIV agents, typically nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) or protease inhibitors. Emivirine functions by binding to the reverse transcriptase enzyme of HIV-1, inhibiting viral replication. In vitro and early clinical studies demonstrated that combinations such as emivirine plus stavudine (d4T) plus lamivudine (3TC) or emivirine plus d4T plus didanosine (ddI) exhibited **synergistic inhibition of HIV-1 replication** and delayed the emergence of resistance. This combination-based approach is necessary due to the high risk of rapid resistance development if emivirine is used as monotherapy. Emivirine was under development to be used as part of triple combination regimens for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and children, but development was ultimately discontinued and it was never approved for clinical use[1][3][5].
