Overview

EmoLED is a medical device that utilizes blue light photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy to support the reparative process of chronic skin lesions, specifically second and third-stage pressure ulcers (decubitus ulcers). Developed by the Italian company Emoled, the device emits blue light (typically in the 410-430 nm range) for a short duration, such as one minute, to stimulate biological healing mechanisms in the wound bed. This therapy is thought to interact with endogenous photoreceptors like cytochromes and flavins, leading to modulated inflammation, enhanced collagen synthesis, and accelerated re-epithelialization. In clinical trial protocols, EmoLED is often evaluated as an adjunct to standard of care, which includes wound cleansing with solutions such as Ringer's lactate or saline, followed by the application of specialized dressings like hyaluronic acid gauze or polyurethane foam.
