Overview

Empagliflozin is a small molecule, oral antidiabetic drug classified as a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It lowers blood glucose by selectively and reversibly inhibiting SGLT2 in the proximal renal tubules, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion. Empagliflozin is approved for use in adults and children aged 10 years or older with type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control, reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (such as heart attack or stroke) in patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, lower the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with heart failure (regardless of diabetes status), and slow progression of chronic kidney disease while reducing related hospitalizations and mortality. Additional benefits include weight loss, blood pressure reduction, and renal protection[1][2][4][5][6].
