Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Empagliflozin + finerenone** is a combination of two oral pharmaceuticals developed for the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). The pair combines **empagliflozin**, a sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, with **finerenone**, a selective, nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA). Empagliflozin reduces blood glucose by inhibiting renal glucose reabsorption, promoting glycosuria, and provides cardiovascular and renal protective effects. Finerenone antagonizes the mineralocorticoid receptor to reduce renal inflammation, fibrosis, and sclerosis, and confers further kidney and cardiovascular protection. Combined, these drugs act via complementary, independent mechanisms, resulting in additive and potentially over-additive benefits—most notably a greater reduction in albuminuria and improved kidney outcomes, as demonstrated in the CONFIDENCE clinical trial. Both agents are orally administered and are designed for use alongside renin-angiotensin system inhibitors in CKD and T2D patients[1][2][3][7][9][14][16].
