Overview

**Empagliflozin + glimepiride** is a combination of two oral antidiabetic small molecules used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. **Empagliflozin** (BI 10773, marketed as Jardiance) is a highly selective sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (**SGLT2**) inhibitor, which acts in the proximal renal tubules to block reabsorption of glucose, thereby promoting its excretion via urine and lowering blood glucose levels. **Glimepiride** is a sulfonylurea that increases insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells by binding to the sulfonylurea receptor subunit of the ATP-sensitive potassium channel. The combination is used to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes, especially when metformin alone is inadequate[1][2][4]. Clinical studies have compared the efficacy and safety of empagliflozin versus glimepiride and also explored their combined effects as add-on therapies in insufficiently controlled diabetes[1][4]. Empagliflozin is approved for use in the US and other regions as Jardiance; the combination with glimepiride does not have a specific unique brand name and is usually considered as a regimen rather than a fixed-dose combination product.
