Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Synjardy XR is a fixed-dose combination of empagliflozin and metformin hydrochloride extended-release, indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that reduces renal glucose reabsorption and increases urinary glucose excretion. Metformin is a biguanide that improves glucose tolerance by lowering both basal and postprandial plasma glucose; it exerts its effects by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. The extended-release formulation allows for once-daily dosing, which can improve patient adherence compared to immediate-release formulations. It was developed through a partnership between Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly.
