Overview
Empagliflozin + sitagliptin is a fixed-dose oral combination of two antidiabetic agents used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It combines empagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, and sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP‑4) inhibitor. Empagliflozin lowers blood glucose by inhibiting SGLT2 in the kidneys, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion. Sitagliptin inhibits DPP‑4, leading to increased levels of incretin hormones (GLP‑1 and GIP), which enhance insulin secretion and suppress glucagon release in a glucose-dependent manner. The combination provides complementary mechanisms for improved glycemic control compared to either agent alone[1][6][8][10].
