Empaguard

Empaguard is an oral small molecule drug developed and marketed by JW Pharmaceutical (a subsidiary of JW Holdings) in South Korea. It contains empagliflozin, a selective inhibitor of the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2). By inhibiting SGLT2 in the proximal renal tubules, the drug reduces the reabsorption of filtered glucose and lowers the renal threshold for glucose, thereby promoting urinary glucose excretion. This mechanism effectively lowers blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Beyond glycemic control, SGLT2 inhibitors like Empaguard provide significant cardiorenal benefits, including a reduced risk of hospitalization for heart failure and slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease, likely through mechanisms involving osmotic diuresis and reduction in intraglomerular pressure.
