Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Empance is a branded generic formulation of empagliflozin, developed and manufactured by the Turkish pharmaceutical company Biofarma. It is an oral small molecule inhibitor of the sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), which is primarily expressed in the proximal renal tubules of the kidneys. By blocking SGLT2, Empance inhibits the reabsorption of filtered glucose back into the bloodstream, promoting its excretion through the urine (glucosuria) and thereby lowering blood glucose levels in an insulin-independent manner. Empance is approved for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, either as monotherapy or in combination with other glucose-lowering agents such as metformin.
