Overview

DKP104, marketed as Emploem Extended-Release Tablet, is an improved new drug (개량신약) developed by Dongkwang for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a fixed-dose combination of empagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, and metformin hydrochloride, a biguanide, formulated as an oral extended-release tablet. Empagliflozin works by inhibiting SGLT2 in the proximal renal tubules, thereby reducing renal glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion. Metformin primarily lowers blood glucose by decreasing hepatic glucose production and improving peripheral insulin sensitivity. This combination therapy is designed to provide complementary mechanisms of action for glycemic control in a convenient once-daily dosing regimen. DKP104 received regulatory approval in South Korea in 2024.
