Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Empowered Choice is an FDA-approved over-the-counter (OTC) emergency contraceptive developed and marketed by Verséa Health. It contains 1.5 mg of levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin, as its active ingredient. The medication is intended for use as a backup method to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure. Its primary mechanism of action is the prevention or delay of ovulation by suppressing the mid-cycle surge of luteinizing hormone. Additionally, it may inhibit fertilization by altering cervical mucus and could potentially interfere with implantation by inducing endometrial changes. It is administered as a single oral tablet and is most effective when taken as soon as possible within 72 hours of the event.
