Overview

EmstoPA is a first-in-class humanized antibody fragment being developed as a specific reversal agent for tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). Developed by the biotech company **Emstopa**, the drug functions as a neutralizing antidote that binds to tPA, inhibiting its enzymatic activity and halting the fibrinolytic process. Its primary indication is the treatment of life-threatening bleeding complications, specifically **intracranial hemorrhage**, which occurs in approximately 5-7% of acute ischemic stroke patients treated with thrombolytic tPA. As a biologic therapeutic, EmstoPA addresses a significant unmet medical need, as there is currently no specific standard-of-care antidote for tPA-induced hemorrhage. The development program received regulatory endorsement from the British MHRA in 2022 and has demonstrated efficacy in stopping bleeding in animal models.
