This is a fixed-dose combination of four antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The components are: - **Emtricitabine**: a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase, blocking viral replication. - **Tenofovir** (usually as disoproxil fumarate or alafenamide): a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI), also inhibiting HIV reverse transcriptase and preventing viral DNA synthesis. - **Darunavir**: an HIV protease inhibitor that prevents the cleavage of viral polyproteins, resulting in immature, noninfectious virus particles[6]. - **Ritonavir**: primarily used here as a pharmacokinetic enhancer ("booster") to increase plasma concentrations of darunavir by inhibiting cytochrome P450 3A-mediated metabolism. This regimen is typically prescribed as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for adults with HIV infection. It works by reducing the amount of HIV in the blood and increasing CD4 cell counts, thereby decreasing morbidity and mortality associated with HIV/AIDS[1][5][6]. While not curative, it helps delay progression to AIDS and reduces risk of opportunistic infections.
