Overview
Emtricitabine + tenofovir disoproxil is a fixed-dose combination of two antiretroviral drugs used for the treatment and prevention of HIV-1 infection. Emtricitabine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), while tenofovir disoproxil is a prodrug of tenofovir, which acts as a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI). Both agents inhibit HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by competing with natural substrates and causing DNA chain termination during viral replication. The combination is approved for use in adults and adolescents both as part of antiretroviral therapy for HIV-1 infection and as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
