Overview

Emtricitabine + tenofovir disoproxil + raltegravir is a combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) regimen being investigated by the University of Alberta for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). This regimen repurposes established HIV medications—specifically two reverse transcriptase inhibitors (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil) and one integrase inhibitor (raltegravir)—to target a suspected human betaretrovirus (HBRV) infection hypothesized to drive PBC pathogenesis. The therapy is primarily evaluated in patients who have shown an inadequate response to standard-of-care ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). By inhibiting viral replication and integration, the combination aims to reduce liver inflammation and improve biochemical markers of cholestasis in patients with refractory PBC.
