Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Emtricitabine and lamivudine are both nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) used as antiretroviral agents in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. They are also active against hepatitis B virus (HBV). Both drugs work by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which is essential for viral replication in HIV and HBV. Emtricitabine is marketed under the brand name Emtriva, while lamivudine is available as Epivir, Epivir-HBV, and other names. These medications are always used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs to prevent resistance and improve efficacy. Neither drug cures HIV or HBV but helps reduce viral load, delay disease progression, and lower transmission risk[1][2][3][4].
