Overview

Emulsiderm is a topical antimicrobial emollient developed and marketed by Dermal Laboratories for the treatment and prevention of dry, itchy skin conditions, particularly eczema and dermatitis. The formulation is a cutaneous emulsion containing three active ingredients: benzalkonium chloride (0.5% w/w), liquid paraffin (25% w/w), and isopropyl myristate (25% w/w). Benzalkonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium antiseptic that acts as an antimicrobial agent by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, specifically targeting *Staphylococcus aureus*, which frequently colonizes the skin of patients with eczema. The liquid paraffin and isopropyl myristate function as emollients, providing an occlusive barrier that softens the skin and prevents transepidermal water loss. Emulsiderm is suitable for all age groups and can be administered either as a bath additive or applied directly to the skin as a leave-on treatment.
