Overview

Enalapril is a prodrug belonging to the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor class. After oral administration, it is bioactivated by hydrolysis of the ethyl ester to enalaprilat, which is the active ACE inhibitor. Enalapril works by inhibiting the angiotensin-converting enzyme, which decreases the production of angiotensin II, a substance that causes blood vessels to tighten. This leads to decreased vasopressor activity and decreased aldosterone secretion, resulting in smoother blood flow and more efficient heart pumping. The drug is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and diabetic kidney disease.
