Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Enantia chlorantha aqueous stem bark extract (EcASBE) is a botanical extract derived from the stem bark of the *Enantia chlorantha* tree (Annonaceae), which is traditionally used in African folk medicine, particularly in Nigeria, for the treatment of malaria. The extract contains various bioactive phytochemicals, including alkaloids (such as protoberberines like palmatine, columbamine, and jatrorrhizine) and flavonoids. EcASBE exhibits potent antiplasmodial activity against both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant strains of *Plasmodium falciparum* in vitro and *Plasmodium berghei* in vivo. It acts through multiple mechanisms, including the inhibition of parasite growth, prevention of red blood cell invasion, and reduction of oxidative stress and inflammatory parameters associated with malaria infection. Additionally, it has demonstrated potential synergistic effects when combined with standard antimalarials like artemisinin and has shown transmission-blocking efficacy by inhibiting mosquito-stage Plasmodium development.
