Overview
Enarodustat is an orally active small molecule inhibitor of hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PH), developed for the treatment of anemia, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). By inhibiting HIF-PH, enarodustat stabilizes hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), leading to increased endogenous erythropoietin production and improved erythropoiesis. This mechanism offers an alternative to injectable erythropoiesis-stimulating agents. The drug was first approved in Japan in September 2020 for anemia associated with CKD and has since been approved in China; it remains under clinical development in the United States and South Korea. Developers include Japan Tobacco, Torii Pharmaceutical, JW Pharmaceutical, and Salubris[1][3][5][7].
