Histoacryl glue + Lipiodol is a therapeutic mixture of the tissue adhesive n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (Histoacryl) and the iodized oil contrast agent ethiodized oil (Lipiodol). This combination is primarily used as an embolic agent in interventional radiology and endoscopic procedures. Enbucrilate (the active ingredient in Histoacryl) is an acrylic resin that undergoes rapid exothermic polymerization upon contact with ionic environments such as blood or moisture, forming a solid cast that mechanically occludes vessels or seals tissue defects. Ethiodized oil (Lipiodol) is added to the mixture to serve two critical functions: it provides radiopacity for fluoroscopic visualization during and after the procedure, and it modulates the polymerization rate of the cyanoacrylate, allowing for controlled delivery through catheters or needles without premature hardening. The mixture is widely utilized for the treatment of bleeding gastric and esophageal varices in patients with portal hypertension, as well as for the management of persistent air leaks, fistulas, and certain vascular malformations.
