Encaps-iBeta is a cell therapy under preclinical development for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. It functions as a pancreatic beta cell replacement therapy, aiming to restore insulin production by replacing or supplementing dysfunctional pancreatic beta cells. The approach involves implanting functional beta cells, potentially derived from stem cells or donor tissue, into patients with diabetes to re-establish endogenous insulin secretion and glucose regulation. Encapsulation technology is used to protect these transplanted cells from immune rejection while allowing them to sense blood glucose and secrete insulin accordingly. Encaps-iBeta was initially developed by Evotec SE and is also associated with Sernova Biotherapeutics[1]. Its primary indication is diabetes mellitus, specifically targeting endocrinology and metabolic diseases[1].
