Overview

Encapsulated FMT is an oral formulation of faecal microbiota transplantation designed to restore a healthy gut microbiome in patients with advanced liver disease. In the context of the PROMISE trial led by King's College London, it is being evaluated as a Phase 3 therapeutic to reduce the incidence of infections and mortality in patients with cirrhosis related to alcohol or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). By introducing diverse microbial communities from healthy donors, the therapy aims to mitigate gut dysbiosis, reduce intestinal permeability, and decrease the translocation of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) that drive systemic inflammation and hepatic decompensation.
