Encapsulated fecal microbiota preparation

Encapsulated fecal microbiota preparation is an investigational microbial therapy developed by the Microbiome Health Research Institute (now known as OpenBiome) for the eradication of gastrointestinal carriage of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE). The product consists of a diverse community of live commensal bacteria derived from healthy human donors, which are processed, concentrated, and encapsulated for oral delivery. The mechanism of action is based on the principle of competitive exclusion and the restoration of colonization resistance. By introducing a healthy and diverse microbial population into the gut, the preparation outcompetes VRE for nutrients and attachment sites, thereby displacing the pathogen and restoring a balanced microbiome. This oral formulation is designed to provide a non-invasive alternative to traditional fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) delivery methods such as colonoscopy or nasogastric tubes.
