Encapsulife is a preclinical cell therapy candidate developed by Beirut Pharmaceuticals Industries (BPI) for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. The product consists of insulin-producing beta-islet cells enclosed within a specialized semi-permeable encapsulation system. This technology is designed to act as a physical barrier that allows for the free diffusion of glucose, oxygen, and nutrients into the capsule and the outward diffusion of insulin, while shielding the transplanted cells from the recipient's immune system (including antibodies and cytotoxic T cells). By providing a protected source of islet cells that can respond physiologically to blood glucose levels, Encapsulife aims to restore endogenous insulin production and glycemic control, potentially eliminating the need for chronic exogenous insulin injections and systemic immunosuppressive therapy.
