Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a 21-amino acid peptide and a highly potent endogenous vasoconstrictor primarily produced by vascular endothelial cells. In the context of clinical research led by Dr. Anna Stanhewicz, ET-1 is utilized as a pharmacological probe to investigate microvascular dysfunction in women with a history of preeclampsia. The research employs intradermal microdialysis to locally deliver ET-1 to the cutaneous microvasculature, allowing for the assessment of endothelin-mediated constriction and the relative roles of endothelin receptor type A (ETA) and type B (ETB) in vascular tone. This work specifically interrogates how prenatal low-dose aspirin (LDA) therapy may mitigate persistent vascular dysfunction and inflammation in the postpartum period, potentially reducing the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease in women who have experienced preeclamptic pregnancies.
