Endothelin-3 (ET-3) is an endogenous 21-amino acid peptide and a member of the endothelin family. In clinical research conducted by the University of Edinburgh, it is utilized as a selective endothelin B (ETB) receptor agonist to investigate the vascular effects of endothelin receptor antagonists like bosentan and sitaxsentan. ET-3 primarily induces vasodilation through the activation of endothelial ETB receptors, which triggers the release of nitric oxide and prostacyclin. This specific study aims to characterize the role of ETA and ETB receptors in regulating plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels and the vasodilator response in humans, particularly in the context of conditions like pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
