Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Enema Phosphates Sodium is a sodium phosphate-based enema formulation (such as Fleet Enema) that has been repurposed and investigated as a diluted oral phosphate supplement for the treatment of mild to moderate hypophosphatemia in critically ill adults. Developed and studied by Ain Shams University, this approach utilizes the commercially available rectal solution for oral administration as an alternative to intravenous sodium glycerophosphate, particularly in settings facing global shortages of parenteral nutrition solutions. In a Phase 2/3 randomized controlled trial (NCT06651892) completed in late 2024, the diluted oral enema formulation demonstrated non-inferiority in efficacy and safety compared to the standard intravenous therapy, successfully replenishing serum phosphate levels without significant differences in adverse events like diarrhea or hypernatremia.
