Overview
Engerix-B + CpG7909 is a combination vaccine formulation being evaluated by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to improve immunization outcomes in individuals who have failed to respond to standard hepatitis B vaccination, particularly those with HIV infection. The formulation combines Engerix-B, a recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) vaccine adsorbed to aluminum hydroxide, with CpG7909, a synthetic B-class oligodeoxynucleotide that acts as a Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) agonist. By stimulating TLR9 on B cells and plasmacytoid dendritic cells, CpG7909 serves as a potent adjuvant that enhances both the magnitude and quality of the antibody and T-cell responses against the hepatitis B virus.
