Engineered Lactobacillus reuteri is a live biotherapeutic product being investigated for the topical treatment of acne. [4] It consists of the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri which has been modified with a special coating formed by zinc sulfate and tannic acid (a metal-polyphenol network or MPN coating). [4, 9] This engineering is intended to enhance the bacterium's survival and colonization on the skin. [4] The proposed mechanism of action is the modulation of the local skin microecology to restore microbial balance, which in turn is expected to reduce inflammation associated with acne. [4] It is being developed by Shenzhen People's Hospital and is under evaluation in a Phase 2 clinical trial for Grade I to III acne. [2, 4, 9]
