Overview

The engineered micro-pancreas (EMP) is an implantable cell therapy device designed to restore insulin production in patients with diabetes. Developed by Betalin Therapeutics and based on technology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the EMP consists of a decellularized porcine lung-derived micro-scaffold seeded with insulin-producing beta cells—either from human donors or generated in vitro. Once implanted under the skin (typically in the leg), the EMP senses blood glucose levels and secretes insulin accordingly, effectively replacing pancreatic function rather than stimulating residual activity. Preclinical studies have shown that the EMP can maintain normal glycemic control for extended periods and sustain viable insulin secretion for up to three months in vitro. The primary indication is diabetes mellitus (type 1 and type 2), aiming to liberate patients from daily insulin injections[1][2][3][4][5][6][8].
