The engineered nasal cartilage graft is an autologous, tissue-engineered biologic developed by the University Hospital Basel for the reconstruction of nasal alar lobule defects following the resection of non-melanoma skin cancer. The product is created by isolating autologous nasal chondrocytes from a patient's septal biopsy, expanding them ex vivo, and seeding them onto a collagen type I and type III membrane scaffold. This construct is cultured to form a functional cartilage graft that is then surgically shaped and implanted into the defect. In a Phase I clinical trial (NCT01242618), the graft demonstrated safety and feasibility, providing satisfactory aesthetic and functional outcomes in elderly patients.
