Overview

Enhanced Platelet-Rich Fibrin (E-PRF) is an autologous, second-generation platelet concentrate and biological scaffold derived from a patient's own blood. It is produced through a specialized centrifugation protocol designed to optimize the concentration of platelets, leukocytes, and endogenous growth factors within a dense fibrin matrix. Developed and investigated at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, E-PRF serves as a biological carrier for therapeutic proteins, such as recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2), in regenerative medicine. The scaffold functions by providing a sustained-release platform for essential growth factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), which collectively promote angiogenesis, cell migration, and tissue healing. In oral and maxillofacial surgery, E-PRF is being evaluated for its ability to enhance bone regeneration and improve the delivery kinetics of osteoinductive agents compared to traditional synthetic carriers like absorbable collagen sponges.
