Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Enoxacin is a broad-spectrum, orally active fluoroquinolone antibiotic used primarily for the treatment of urinary tract infections and gonorrhea. It acts as a bactericidal agent by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (DNA topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination in bacteria. This inhibition prevents the untwisting of DNA required for replication and cell division. Enoxacin is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including some strains resistant to other antibiotics with different mechanisms of action. The drug is rapidly absorbed after oral administration with high bioavailability and achieves high concentrations in the urinary tract[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Developed as part of the quinolone class, it has also been studied for its effects on microRNA processing via TRBP-dependent pathways[8].
