enoxaparin + heparin

enoxaparin + heparin refers to the comparative or combined use of enoxaparin, a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), and unfractionated heparin (UFH). Enoxaparin functions by binding to and accelerating the activity of antithrombin III, which primarily inhibits coagulation factor Xa and, to a lesser extent, factor IIa (thrombin). Unfractionated heparin similarly activates antithrombin III but provides more potent inhibition of thrombin compared to LMWHs. This specific drug combination/comparison was evaluated by National Guard Health Affairs in a Phase 3 clinical trial for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in gynecologic oncology patients undergoing major surgery. The goal of such therapy is to reduce the incidence of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in high-risk surgical populations.
