Overview

Enoxaparin + vitamin K antagonist refers to the combination therapy of enoxaparin, a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), with a vitamin K antagonist (VKA) such as warfarin or acenocoumarol. This regimen is commonly used for the treatment and prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Enoxaparin acts by activating antithrombin III, which inhibits coagulation factor Xa and to a lesser extent coagulation factor IIa, thereby preventing clot formation. Vitamin K antagonists inhibit the enzyme vitamin K epoxide reductase, reducing the synthesis of active clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X in the liver. The combination is often used during initial anticoagulation therapy for VTE; enoxaparin provides immediate anticoagulation while VKAs require several days to achieve therapeutic effect[1][2][3][6].
