Enoxaparin sodium is a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) derived from porcine intestinal mucosa heparin. It exerts its anticoagulant effect by binding to and accelerating the activity of antithrombin III, which subsequently inhibits pro-thrombotic enzymes, primarily clotting factor Xa and, to a lesser extent, factor IIa (thrombin). This selective inhibition provides a predictable antithrombotic response with a lower risk of bleeding compared to unfractionated heparin. The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University is investigating the use of enoxaparin sodium for the short-term prevention of thrombosis in patients undergoing arteriovenous fistula (AVF) surgery, a procedure essential for hemodialysis access that is frequently complicated by early-stage stenosis or occlusion due to clot formation.
