Overview

Enprofylline is a xanthine derivative and small molecule bronchodilator used primarily for the symptomatic treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It has also been investigated or used in the management of cerebrovascular insufficiency, sickle cell disease, diabetic neuropathy, and peripheral vascular diseases. Enprofylline acts mainly as a competitive nonselective phosphodiesterase inhibitor, leading to increased intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels and subsequent relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle. Unlike other xanthines such as theophylline, it has relatively little activity as an adenosine receptor antagonist[1][2][3][4][6]. Its bronchodilatory effect is attributed to its inhibition of phosphodiesterase enzymes rather than significant antagonism at adenosine receptors[2][3]. Enprofylline is rapidly absorbed when administered orally.
