Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Entecavell is an orally disintegrating tablet (ODT) formulation of entecavir, a guanosine nucleoside analogue used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It acts as a potent and selective inhibitor of the HBV polymerase, effectively blocking the three functional stages of viral replication: priming of the HBV polymerase, reverse transcription of the negative strand DNA from the pregenomic messenger RNA, and synthesis of the positive strand HBV DNA. The ODT formulation is designed to dissolve rapidly in the mouth without the need for water, which can improve treatment adherence and convenience for patients, including stable liver transplant recipients. Clinical research led by Jongman Kim has specifically evaluated the efficacy and safety of switching patients to this formulation to maintain viral suppression while monitoring impacts on renal function.
