Overview

Entecavir is a guanosine nucleoside analogue antiviral medication primarily used to treat chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults and children aged two years and older. It selectively inhibits HBV polymerase by competing with deoxyguanosine triphosphate and blocks all three steps of the viral replication process: base priming, reverse transcription of the negative strand from pregenomic messenger RNA, and synthesis of the positive strand of HBV DNA. After phosphorylation by cellular kinases to its active triphosphate form, entecavir is incorporated into viral DNA leading to chain termination and inhibition of further viral replication. Entecavir does not cure hepatitis B but reduces viral load and liver inflammation. It is more potent than lamivudine for HBV treatment. The drug was developed by Bristol Myers Squibb[1][5][6].
